A Message from Our Chaiman
The American Heart Association and Healthy Children
Founded in 1924, the American Heart Association today is the nation's oldest and largest voluntary health organization dedicated to reducing disability and death from cardiovascular diseases and stroke. In 2009, Mississippi received $2,600,000 in research dollars that was dispersed among the University of Mississippi, Mississippi State University, and the University of Southern Mississippi. Research is needed to fight cardiovascular disease and stroke the No. 1 and No. 3 killers that claim more than 910,000 lives a year. The American Heart Association supports research, professional and public education, advocacy and community service programs to help all Americans live longer, healthier lives.
I am honored to be working with the Metro Jackson American Heart Association and serving as the Chairman of the 2010 Metro Jackson Heart Ball, Art for Heart. My personal passion for volunteering with the Heart Association started in 1997 the year my father experienced a heart attack. Over the years, I have gained tremendous respect for the cardiovascular field and hospital systems here in Mississippi. I am proud to be from a state known for its generosity and a community filled with so many compassionate and caring hearts.
Adults are not alone in their risk for heart disease, stroke and other cardiovascular diseases. Increasingly, children are at risk. That is why I am happy to see the focus for the 2010 Metro Jackson Heart Ball, Art for Heart Special Appeal will be working to help children and families live heart healthy lives. Programs like “Jump Rope For Heart”, “Hoops For Heart” and “Alliance for a Healthier Generation” are in place for creating healthier lifestyles for all children. All of these areas certainly spark positive change. What a wonderful way to empower and inspire all young people!
My wish is to have you join the efforts of the American Heart Association in making a very positive effect in the lives of many Mississippians. Please review the enclosed information and help make a difference in future generations. Thank you and I look forward to celebrating Art For Heart with you on Friday, January 22, 2010.
Sincerely,
Louise Hooker Ridgeway
Chairman, 2010 Metro Jackson Heart Ball, Art For Heart
